If You’ve Never Been to Maine

If You’ve Never Been to Maine

If you’re not from Maine,

You’ve never seen a sunset,

With all their gorgeous colors like blue, pink, purple, or red.

You’ve never seen trailers,

Trailers that are being moved by trucks,

Or trailers that are just sitting there looking lonely.

If you’re not from Maine,

You’ve never seen the rockiest lake.

The rocks are like big bumps

That feel spiky or slimy or slippery.

Some are small and some are big.

If you’re not from Maine,

You’ve never had ice cream!

Big scoops of creamy deliciousness,

The sweet taste of your favorite ice cream,

Like chocolate, chocolate chip cookie dough,

Or the Snickers kind.

If you’re not from Maine,

You’ve never had a fire,

The orange flames shooting up in the air,

The sound of breaking twigs,

Making hot dogs and s’mores.

You’ve never seen the pine trees.

They are everywhere.

The smell of the pines refreshes me.

Do you know what is there?

Do you know Maine?

One of My Heroes: My Dad

One of My Heroes:  My Dad

My dad helps me a lot.  He is a hero because he helps me cook and bake and fixes things for me and my family.  My dad teaches me a lot of things.  He shows me a lot of things.  He is a hero because he shows me how to bake and how to cook.  My dad is awesome!

I’m Talking Serious!

I’m Talking Serious

(a thesaurus poem)

I’m talking serious!

I’m talking heavy!

I’m talking profound, dignified!

I’m talking sober, intent, grim!

I’m talking calm, genuine, honest, important!

I’m talking SERIOUS!

If I Were in Charge of the World

If I Were in Charge of the World

(Form change poem with thanks to Judith Viorst)

If I were in charge of the world,

I’d cancel doctor’s appointments,

Annoying things like brothers stealing candy,

And also any more doctor’s appointments.

If I were in charge of the world,

There would be more time to sleep,

More time to play,

And lots of playing Crazy 8s.

If I were in charge of the world,

You wouldn’t have brothers that don’t pay you back,

You wouldn’t have brothers that steal your candy,

And you wouldn’t have brothers that won’t let you have their candy even when you give them some.

If I were in charge of the world,

Ice cream with Chinese food and spaghetti would be a balanced meal,

All people would be giving kids candy all the time,

And a person who sometimes forgets to eat in the morning,

And sometimes doesn’t remember to brush their teeth

Would still be allowed to be

In charge of the world.

My Family

I’m from rice chicken and baked goods like cookies and Mom’s apple pie.

I’m from watching movies with my brother and my parents.

I’m from a special trip to Virginia to visit my sister.

I’m from a wooded area in New Hampshire.

I’m from a patio with grey stones that I helped my dad build.

I’m from antiques in our house, plus a dog and two cats.

I’m from the smell of baking brownies.
